Make Your Pictures Timeless

Getting rid of the clutter in your photos - even those family shots you take - helps to make them timeless.

I tend to forget where I am when taking nature shots, so for me, it's always a good idea to take a picture of the street name, or the town's welcome sign, or the highway numbers. That helps me when I am looking at them somewhere in the future, to remember where I was as I take lots of unplanned "road trips" just to practice with the camera.

For those photographs you are taking that you hope will be around in the future - simply because you are an artist extraordinaire, and everyone must have the privilege of viewing them - avoid such things.

Do not include pictures on your walls, signs on the roads, trendy clothes, or makeup, posters and calendars. One of the reasons why I'd love to get myself a backdrop for taking portrait pictures at home. I suppose it would probably be a good idea to learn how to take portraits first.

The Rule of Thirds

When composing your shot, apply the rule of thirds. If you are like me when I heard this in class I had a seriously blank look on my face. But I'm also sure that thousands (maybe even millions) already know what that means.

In laymen terms: move your main subject matter off centre - it looks better.

This was a fascinating story and one I am delighted to write a short review for. I was given this book to read from a friend because she likes to keep up with all the books that receive a stamp of approval from Canada Reads.

While the story is fiction, there are many facts about how slaves came to settle in Nova Scotia, which is something I did not know, and it is something that is not taught in our schools. Our history lessons are sadly lacking it seems.

The story follows the life a young girl, captured and sold into slavery in the late 1700's. From the horror of walking for months through Africa, chained, beaten and branded - how she was taught to "catch babies" - how she learned to read - how she went from Africa, to the United States, then to Nova Scotia, back to Africa and finally to England.

The amount of research that had to go into the writing of this book staggers my mind. From the details of life in her village, to the horrible conditions of the slave ship, the slave block, life on a plantation, the loss of family- all vividly portrayed.

This book is full of a history few want to read, but is told in such a way that you don't realize you are learning.

A must read.

Changes

There is nothing so constant in life as change.
That seems like a quote I might have heard somewhere but I do not recall the source.

There has been little activity on this blog. And, have you noticed that it is getting farther and farther away from the original purpose? Jeff Foxworthy has nothing to do with anyone's writing journey, even if it did give me a chuckle.

The blog was started after receiving some well meaning encouragement from other writers. I think perhaps I tried to do too much too soon. When you start on any of the social networks and prove to some that you CAN write, there are those well meaning people who will offer you advise. It's wonderful they try to help, but it's difficult to know what advise to listen to - what will work for you.

Blogging can bring recognition to a person's work, back links that can prove useful and some little income - but it must be done right. You learn these things as you move along trying to soak up all the information and the constant changes.

I can say with absolute certainty this particular blog has not been done right.

My dilemma:
Do I continue with this one and revamp it
Do I shut it down and start anew
Do I give up the attempt all together

RCMP warns of "one of the most sophisticated" credit card schemes.

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - The RCMP is warning of a sophisticated credit card scam that's spreading across the country and involves people being asked to hand over their security information to fraudsters.

An officer with the commercial crime section in St. John's, N.L., said Thursday that several people have contacted police in the province to report suspicious calls from supposed credit card agents.

The caller is looking for the three-digit security number on the back of their MasterCard or Visa — a critical piece of information that would allow them to make purchases with the card.

Cpl. Vicki Chalker said the difference with this ruse is that the callers already have the person's address, phone number and credit card number, and claim that they're investigating unusual purchases.

"This is, as far as I'm concerned, one of the most sophisticated schemes I've seen," she said.

"They're really doing a remarkable job at fraudulently obtaining our information, so the public needs to be very vigilant in securing their personal information."

Chalker said the caller provides a badge number and indicates they're with Visa or MasterCard's security and fraud department, and are checking on an unusual purchase.

The caller asks the cardholder if they have bought a $497 anti-telemarketing device and when they say no, tells them they will be reimbursed for it.

The caller reads off and confirms the cardholder's mailing address, making it seem like a legitimate call, Chalker said.

In order to complete the transaction and ensure the person has the card, the caller says they need the security numbers on the back of the credit card.

Chalker said fewer than 10 people have reported the calls in the province, and that police were alerted to it by the Royal Bank on Wednesday.

"They've made their way from southern Alberta to the East Coast and this is happening all over Canada now," she said.

She said people should never hand over personal information over the phone and should instead contact the credit card company directly if they have any concerns.

Chalker said scam artists can get personal information through unsecured online sites, people's mail and at places like department stores that collect names, addresses and phone numbers on credit card applications.

Photography has just so many levels, options, and creative opportunities. Choosing your options is much like choosing your writing path, or your niche in marketing.

The first step is to decide what you want to do with the camera:

An Honorable lesson

A lesson that should be taught in all schools . . And colleges

Back in September, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School , did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom.

When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks.

'Ms.. Cothren, where're our desks?'

She replied, 'You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.'

They thought, 'Well, maybe it's our grades'

'No,' she said.

'Maybe it's our behavior.'

She told them, 'No, it's not even your behavior.'

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom.

By early afternoon television news crews had started gathering in Ms.Cothren's classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the deskless classroom, Martha Cothren said, 'Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.'

At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it.

Twenty-seven (27) War Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall... By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned..

Martha said, 'You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you.. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it's up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don't ever forget it.'

Scarlet Nights - Jude Deveraux

Not all books are written to educate or to expound on some wonderful theory, or expose a horrible secret. Some are written to provide the reader with the simple pleasure of reading a good story.

As a story teller myself, I can appreciate many different types of stories and certainly enjoy an eclectic variety of reading material.

I just finished reading "Scarlet Nights" by Jude Deveraux.

It is pure fiction which I picked up because I have read her work before and knew I was in for an enjoyable few days as I followed this story line.

Ms. Deveraux has a wonderful sense of humor which shines through, and those who know me, can understand how I would enjoy that.

This story has a bit of mystery, romance (but not horrible trashy stuff), and humor throughout.

If you have read Jude Deveraurx before, I'm sure you will want to pick up this book to follow undercover detective Mike Newland through the sleepy little town of Edilean.

A Book Review

I was invited to a book launch by a friend, who has a neighbor who wrote a book.

I have to admit that I have never been to one before. It was standing room only and all books were sold I am told. That sounds like success to me.

The Title - Hope Burned

The Author - Brent LaPorte

I read the book this morning. It was compelling while disturbing.

It is my habit to read "feel good" stories when I pick up a novel, so the jacket of this book left me wondering if it would be a page turner.

It was.

The author crawled into the skin of this character in such a way that as the reader, I felt I was looking at the world through the eyes of this young boy. I was impressed and compelled to read it in one sitting. What an amazing success for a first timer.

The story is told so well, you forget it is fiction. What disturbed me was the fact that this could easily have happened.

Character and Plot - Novel Writing

In one of my earlier posts, and my profile all over the place I have boasted of having written the first 10 chapters of the next great Canadian novel. Then life happened and it got pushed to the back burner.

Now, after some extensive research on how to actually write a novel, I have come to the conclusion that what I have written just wouldn’t make it in the outside world.

My friends and family have all said it’s wonderful. I think they feel they have to because I might say something completely awful to them if they didn’t. To be honest, I wouldn’t put that past me. I have been known to speak before I think. If only I could employ the same filters I use when I am writing, my verbal communications skills would certainly improve.

Having said that, I have now returned to this long forgotten work of art only to make the decision I must either scrap it or rework it completely.

Character Development and Plotting
I have totally scrapped the 10 chapters completed in my very rough first draft. Not the idea though, because it is a good one. I'm told you will need to re-write your story a minimum of 4-5 times before you get it right, so I am not to be upset about that. To be honest with you, I was at first, but I'm over it, and getting on with things. I set myself a deadline for character development. The main characters are done. Phew! I made that deadline. Well - sort of - I'm only a few days late. :) I would love to include the lesser characters in this process. But I don't know who they are yet. That brings me to my next stop along this journey. I must PLOT I have to tell you all - it's much simpler writing articles!

I'm off the start my next project here at work and will attempt to get back to you all with a little more regularity.

Novel Writing - Build Your Characters First

I’m starting over on my novel, making some big changes. Mostly because I have discovered that I wasn't writing material anyone would want to read. But, it's good I came to that conclusion now because I can just imagine the scathing comments I would have received if I had tried to publish it. It turns out writing a novel is so much more complicated than writing an article. Go figure.

I’m thinking it’s a good idea to start with character development. From reading and trying to learn, I think character development should cover more of the character than the physical characteristics. In fact physical characteristics should be too large a factor at all.

Because these people have been living, breathing and carrying conversations with me inside my head, I’m pretty sure I know them. Now I need to decide how much you need to know about them.

I think better when I am writing so logically I need to write them down and get myself organized. Some people use recipe cards to keep track of their characters. Some use One Notes to keep track of everything for their books and some use a story board in an office.

Lynda M. Martin is an author I have the privilege of knowing (cyber speaking) and I have taken some of her lessons to heart. The most important part of the novel in her opinion is the development of your characters.

Initially it will have to be the recipe card idea. Mostly because I don’t actually have an “office” and putting up a story board on my living room wall will likely take away from the decor. I’m just wondering about how they will travel?

Fiction - The Beginning

Writing a Novel

It's been very interesting reading some of my favorite writers. My current focus is on fiction writers - because if I am going to finish this novel I am going to need direction. I have been paying particular attention to the beginning of their work.

The beginning is very important. You want to make sure the reader wants to turn the page and find out who, where, why, or what. First sentence, first paragraph, first chapter; those have been my focus while reading my favorites.

I think in all likelihood, once my novel is done, I may just feel the need to go back and rework the beginning.

How do people who invent things come up with their ideas?

I cannot count the number of times I have read something or seen something and wondered, "Why didn't I think of that?" I'm guessing its most likely because I didn't have to. Others might argue that I just don't have the imagination...

I just might agree with them when I think of some of the things people have invented. For example; The Rubik's Cube or the pull top tin can.

The wonderful thing about the human mind is that we CAN think of these things, and we daily DO. The difference is that some have the foresight to patent their ideas.

The Evolution of Inventions

The Telegraph evolved into the telephone, then the cell phone and now VOIP (voice over internet protocol)

The Abacus commonly known as the "Chinese Computer" was in fact not invented by the Chinese. The oldest surviving abacus dates back to circa 300 B.C. and was used by the Babylonians. The Chinese, the Japanese and the Russians all developed their own.

Consider the evolution of the Television, cameras, the internet, motor cars, rail cars, and airplanes. When you consider what we have seen in the past century it staggers the mind. We are not finished yet because we are all only as limited as our imagination.

Imagination

Who would have thought that some ugly little green thing with a smushed up face, huge ears and wee tufts of fuzzy hair would become such a craze for young and old alike? Who thinks of these things? For the few who have never watched Star Wars - this is a description of Yoda.

Incorporate a writer's imagination with the creative abilities of the artist and mix in a computer geek and you come up with the wonders of computer animation. Not to diminish some of the wonderful work of the greats like Walt Disney - whose legend still lives on.

The form of communication itself has seen some pretty awesome invention. The Quill tip was replaced with the fountain pen, then the ball point pen and markers, all available in any color you can imagine. Shorthand gave way to Dictaphones; to tapes recorders then voice recognition software.

The imaginations of the human mind, combined with the ability to learn have created some amazing things. And the ability to continually improve on those ideas will continue to happen because there is always someone out there saying,

"Why didn't I think of that?"

Wild and Crazy

Steve Martin coined the phrase "Wild and Crazy Guy". But I suggest that some of those wild and crazy ideas that chase each other around in our heads when we try to come up with inventive solutions, could one day be the next safety pin. It might be in our own best interest to do something with some of those wild and crazy ideas. What d'ya think?

Writer's Block

Have you ever started writing something and get stumped?

I have been working on an article that I just can't get right. It doesn't answer the questions I am looking to answer, and it is just sitting there.

It's a personal thing with me. I've set myself a goal to finish it, but because it has not worked out the way I want it to, I'm having trouble getting back to it.

Any suggestions? How do you deal with this type of writing block?

Why Write

Just like the artist who paints, sculpts, draws or takes spectacular photographs, you do it because you have to. It is your craft and you need to work it. Writers are compelled to write.

Like any other art form there are many different aspects to writing. Writing to heal, to educate, for fun, or for profit all take on a life of their own.

If you are by nature a story teller, then novels are likely your forte.
If you are an innate teacher, then you will write to educate.
If you are a “writer” and have been through something traumatic, then writing to heal can take on many forms, most often that of a journal.
If you just like to write, you will like do so just for the fun of it.
If you are inquisitive and a writer, you will likely end up doing something along the lines of a journalist

If you are lucky and can use your craft for profit, you are doing what you love and loving what you do.

Gadgets, Gadgets....So Confusing!

When I bought my Blackberry I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.
That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to my cell phone and every other program within the texting world.
My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.
The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife and everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. I had to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud.
I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-ul-ating." You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if I made a right turn instead…well, it was not a good relationship.
When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.
To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I can lose three phones all at once and have run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings.
The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them in with me.
Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or Plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look.

I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, No, but I do toot a lot."

Is it just me, or is there a new trend in town for writers? I have seen contests and challenges in several places to write badly. What is the worse you can do?

I first noticed this, and wrote a separate blog inviting you all to join the fun, with Lynda M. Martin. Her HubPages idea is "A Dark and Stormy Night" contest. There are so many entries on this one. Fun.

I have since noticed others. Maybe it's been there all along and I am just noticing, or maybe it's really the new thing for writers to indulge and have some fun.

It certainly doesn't take long to discover there are some heated conversations and debates about publishing. Because I am in the process of writing a book, I naturally want to consider what to do with it once it is finished. Researching this topic leads me to consider three different options.

Traditional Publishing houses

I am very serious about researching each of these. I have started the research by listening to some conversations on LinkIn. Authors who have used each of these methods and have shared their success/failures with others.

Want to write fiction?

Writing is a form of communication that is far reaching. For me, I want to become an author - of fiction. I have written 10 chapters in a novel I used to think would be that famous New Canadian showcase. Ha!

In the past 9 months, I have been reading some wonderful authors on HubPages. I have also had the privilege of interviewing some wonderful authors in my "success" series of articles I am writing. In the process I have learned that there is so much I don't know, and so much I need to change.

I have even come to the conclusion that it might be best if I threw out what I have done so far and start from scratch.

I would suggest if you are thinking of writing fiction, that you read Lynda M. Martin's hubs. I will list the first few here for you for easy reference. Save yourself some time and read them before you start if possible. I wish I had :)

Back to Work

Being busy at my day job - the one that pays the bills - for the past couple of months, has really taken away from the time I would like to spend on my novel. I know it sounds like an excuse, but until I start making some serious money with my writing - that's the way things work.
So, I am back from 4 days of seminars, conferences, etc for which I have been so busy planning, and I have a few days to myself.
One of the very first things I did after spending some much needed time to rejuvenate with family, was to pull out my notes on my novel. I tend to jot down notes in a journal as they come to me and I was pleasantly surprised when I read them over. I have managed to collect some great thoughts on the plot, back plots and subplots just as I have been learning to do.
That was a nice feeling.
So, while I have not written much on line - I have kept the thought in the back of my head that I must write every day. My journal has helped collect some pretty good ideas.
And, if you don't read too much from me in the next few days, I'm hoping that's because I am busy writing elsewhere.

Enchanted MakeOvers

I have been given some inspiration from a fellow RedGage friend about building pages on Blogger - more about that in a later blog.
I only mention that because I would not typically post this here. I currently have no other blog for these things, so it goes here. (I'm also in the process of building a website, so we'll see how that progresses! :)

Back to why I am writing today.
Terry Grahl has a non profit organization called Enchanted MakeOvers What I am looking for today, is help from all my friends. She has made the top 10 finalist positions for $10,000. We can help by voting for her business.

Terry's journey into shelter transformation work began in January 2007 when she was asked to help paint a shelter in Pontiac, Mich. An award-winning interior decorator, Terry immediately saw the potential in the dreary, sparsely furnished rooms. "No woman or child seeking refuge should have to sleep in bedrooms that reflect feelings of despair," she says. Transforming the shelter required finding and organizing enthusiastic volunteers and donors nationwide. Six months later, the makeover was complete, and Terry had found her true calling. RedGage Update

Who knew? What a wonderfully warm welcome I have received at RedGage! I will admit that many of my friends at HubPages have found me there, but hey! I'm good with that.

One of the big differences in RedGage and HubPages is the fact that RedGage has a "wall" like in Facebook, so exchanges between friends is relatively easy, and familiar.

The second thing I noticed is that RedGage has an affinity for pictures. That's good for those who love to take pictures and post them, because you can make a few pennies at it. So far, I have posted only one. And it was featured - which surprised the heck out of me.

I will say this, that interaction between you and your friends - like any other social network - is what works best.

While I know this theory, and typically love to interact with those who tell me I am awesome! :), I think my timing was off just a bit. This next two weeks will be very busy for me at work, so I will have to try and ignore the influx of comments I have been receiving and dedicate only a certain amount of time to them. That's going to be hard for me - wish me well in the endeavor - because I seriously LOVE recognition! How sad is that? Aw well, 'tis what I like and I won't apologize for it.

RedGage Start Up

Because I love to write, and because I am narcissistic by nature and LOVE to receive recognition (I'm more favorable to the good kind), I've decided to try out other sites.

HubPages so far has been very good for me. It has allowed me to get my feet wet in the field of writing and finding my "voice" as they say. It's also been wonderful because I was nominated as one of the top 200 Hubbers for 2009. From that list, I made the short list of the top 20 Hubbers for 2009. These were all votes solicited without my knowledge, so it was even better. I tied for first place for "Most Compassionate Writer for 2009" with another amazing writer.

I have, and will continue, to write on HubPages because I love the community, and I love their layouts and revenue generating opportunities.

Now, I think I will broaden my horizons. Next on my list is a stop over at RedGage to see what's up, and how well I can mix and mingle with that particular social community.

I don't want to do too much at once because I don't think you add to a community if you are not able or willing to put in the time to build on the networking opportunities that present themselves.

As I'm new there, I expect I will make some mistakes, and maybe even miss some good opportunities, but I will never learn if I don't try.

So, expect for a bit, some information on RedGage, as I try out what they have to offer.

Under Pressure

Most of the time, I work better under pressure or meeting deadlines. However, there are times when this is just frustrating.
When you are working as part of a "team" and the other members don't step up to the plate. FRUSTRATING.

I'm currently in that situation. Deadlines and timelines are all down to crunch time. And it seems like everyone has jumped ship. Even those in charge.

I'm just not made that way, so I end up doing the majority of the work, under pressure. Not so happy about these time lines when no one else cares a hoot.

Finished complaining, now off to work.

Please note, this is why I have not been posting much! I'll get back to it, or sneak it in when I can, but I'm concerned about the quality.

I’m going to go a little off topic for a moment. I say it’s only a little off topic because the movie is loosely based on a book. And I am, in a manner of speaking, “friends of the family”.

Leah is the daughter of a friend so I am doing what I can to promote her first ever movie! She is a new Canadian author. Her first book is a best seller entitled The Continuity Girl. ~~This is the book upon which the movie “Abroad” is loosely based.~~

Good Writing tips by Lynda M Martin

I have recently reminded myself of the fact I have given myself a deadline for character development. I highly doubt that I will make that deadline because I have undertaken a new project.

Sharing work amongst ourselves in a writer’s community has provided me with a very large learning opportunity. I have been following Lynda L Martin quite closely over at HubPages.

Lynda’s approach to teaching us “newbies” is perfect for me because I am a tactile learner and her hands on approach works well for me. I continue to read her articles with gratitude and appreciation as I try to incorporate the learning in my own work in progress.

This does create a problem though. I have decided to rework my entire WIP. That seems like a huge job as I have 9 chapters written to date. But I am determined that is the best course of action for me at the moment.

I encourage new writers to at least read Lynda’s articles. I have found them be very helpful.

The Art of Transition

Making a conscious decision to get things in order and to make the necessary changes to allow me to do what I want to do (write that dang novel) can be quite difficult.

I'm finding the transition to author quite a bit more difficult than I expected. I am working hard at The Art of Transition. It's not as easy as I anticipated.

While I love to write, and can do so with some degree of success, writing a novel is quite a bit different than writing for work, writing articles, or a blog. But if I don't give it a go I will always wonder.

So now comes the time to tighten the boot strings and get down to the business of writing.

Setting a deadline

This journey I am on to become a published author has so many aspects to it that I never dreamed of. What a ride! There is so much to learn, so many great authors out there and so many wonderful people who offer their knowledge.

I am slowly finding some of them as I dip my toes into this very competitive field.

One of the ladies I have met on my Journey is Rebecca Emrich. I met her first through HubPages, and we keep in touch all over the net. I find her everywhere, she has such energy and such drive. In addition to giving me an award **blushing - she has taught me much about the world of publishing just through her blogs.

Her blog today spoke about setting yourself deadlines. For the self publisher - that's very difficult. For an unpublished author with no agent on your case to meet your deadline, it's also is difficult. I have to say, that I have been very guilty of not being serious about setting a deadline, and it's very easy to say, "I'll do it tomorrow."

I will set myself a deadline to have my character development done by the middle of March and my next chapter done by the end of March.

I'm asking you to keep me accountable and that's just a little scary

Writing a Novel: Back to the Beginning

I realize that in exploring the ins and outs of writing a novel, jumping from the beginning to beyond the finished product is a very large step. My previous post was a plug I couldn’t ignore and my excuse is that it is loosely related to my blog topics.

For me, the novel I have started had its beginning as a result of a dream. This was one of those very strange dreams that wake you up, are disturbing on some level and just seem to stick with you. I managed to fall back to sleep but remembered it upon waking. So I wrote it down.

It is now the prologue.

Writing A Novel

Yes I am one of those writers that have the great Canadian Novel in the works. There I've said it. Add me to the list of those who dream of doing so. But I think I will eventually get there - because I have a desire to do so.

I believe this blog is going to take a turn toward learning how to go about doing just that. So if you are a beginner, you might want to come along for the ride. If you have already made it there, I'd love for you to chip in every once in awhile. I'm sure that somewhere along the way I am going to go in the wrong direction. Feel free to offer suggestions - I'm willing to learn.

Beginning the Novel

Being an avid reader I sometimes think there is no subject that has not been covered, no mystery that has not been solved in a dozen different ways, nothing new under the sun that someone hasn't written about. Will that stop me? Will it stop you?

I love to read other peoples views of things. And that's not difficult because there are as many ideas and theories as there are people who think about them. Yours may not align with mine, but at the very least it will either give me food for thought or it will give me a chuckle.

Because a writer writes about everything, I tend to keep a pad of paper and a pen handy at all times. This means there is one sitting on the night stand beside the bed. When I am lucky, and remember what my dreams are about I like to keep a journal of them. Some people like to try and analyze them - I just like to keep track of them because dreams can be scary, funny, confusing, or simply entertaining. And I seriously think many of them are great material that could be used if I could just find enough time to do so.

One such vivid dream duly recorded in the middle of the night, is currently sitting as the prologue of said "great Canadian novel".

For many writers, there is no such thing as a holiday or time off. Writers can be critical of taking such time since often it is the only type of way to make or keep money. A time of renewal, however is vital. The New Year is the perfect time in which to renew. Take a day or two off and to help, here are some things you'll need.

A Journal:
One which has never been used for any other purpose than this, it should be blank and unlined, as it will be used for not only writing but also other creative purposes. Not for writing what you're working on right now.

Peaceful Music:
Choose wisely, since each writer is unique, each one should make their their own choice.

A Quiet Place:
Again, it is up to the writer to choose where this will be but not a busy place where they will be distracted.

The purpose of this renewal is to break the cycle that many writers face. They need to be kind as often they will find that they want to be near a computer or writing. It's best not to bring the laptop on this day off. The journal is used to draw what is seen or to record thoughts, paste pictures or anything except what they were working on at their office.

Be kind with yourself, and enjoy the day off. Tell others what day it is and relax.

Experiencing Washington DC

I have been absent recently, due in part to the fact that I have been traveling. It was nothing too exciting, as it was for business, but we did manage to catch some of the sites.

My traveling experience is quite limited so I was very happy to have my colleague with me who is a little more travel savvy than I am. Even with all the hype about the extra security at the airports for flights traveling to the US (especially its capital city), I was not prepared for it.

Perhaps my inexperience showed because they were quite easy on me compared to my traveling partner. Or perhaps I just have an innocent look. HA.

I took along my new journal and filled several pages with observations. I plan on using that journal to write a hub in the near future, but have not as yet determined what particular angle I will use.

Being the typical tourist did have advantages. All we had to do was say “We are from Canada and we don’t know . . .” Everyone was very willing to offer directions, suggestions for the best places to eat and shop and the things they thought would be a “must see”. Overall, my impression of the American people was one of interest and politeness. Again, perhaps I can attribute it to that “I’m really clueless” look and people felt compelled to offer assistance.

Whatever the reason, I enjoyed my visit to Washington DC, and would recommend you add it to your list of places to visit. It is rich in history and culture.

There has been in recent years a surge in books geared for writers. Some of them are great, but when I speak to groups of writing hopefuls, three of my four suggestions are classics.

The one book that is new is Release Your Writing: Book Publishing Your Way, by Helen Gallagher. It’s a dandy little book that focuses on the very practical side of getting published—using your computer efficiently, getting your manuscript in shape, deciding how to approach the publishing process, which type of publishing to choose, and then, my favorite part, marketing your book. Fully 1/3 of the book is great tips for getting the word out. My book was actually already published before I found this book, but I got it just because of all the marketing tips.

Each of the other books fills a different need, but all are classics—made evident by the fact that all are still in print. Dorothea Brande’s fabulous Becoming a Writer dates to the 1920s, which is why all she talks about is typewriters. However, the book is still invaluable for honing your “psychological game.” She teaches you how to make writing an almost Pavlovian response, how to come up with ideas, and how to nurture the kind of split personality that minimizes the trauma of rejection. (Never send the “sensitive artist” to the mailbox; reserve that task for the “accountant.”)

William Zinsser’s classic On Writing Well should be required reading for anyone who picks up a pen. Aside from being a magnificent book on how to perfect your writing, it also happens to be written really well, and is a joy to read.

Finally, I urge everyone to get Strunk & White’s Elements of Style. It’s a slim volume that boils down the essentials to simple rules with examples. If you’re going to write, you might as well do it correctly.

I`m quite excited to have made and be able to share some connections I have made from previous networking. The social networking thing is about making meaningful connections and building relationships with the people you meet there.

I have met some very wonderful women through my travels at some of the social medial networking sites I have been a part of. Keep in mind that some of these connections and relationships have been developed over a 2-3 year period. These are not the fly by night “friends” that are so easy to make and even easier to lose.

I am excited. So excited that I had to take a picture to capture the moment and make sure I wasn't just dreaming it.

HubPages has mysteriously given me a score of 100 for one of my articles. I know most people don't care, but I do.

In fact, most of us Hubbers don't even know how the scores are calculated, but I'll take this today and ride the wave of excitement for a few hours.

Continuing the Journey

My journey to fame . . .

I just know this is going to be a long journey. I hope I have enough years left in me to see it through.

One of the things I have been reading up on is marketing. I don't do marketing very well, I admit it, I suck!

My next step is to figure out how to build an email list. I mean what software I need.

My research so far indicates that I must offer something to my readers as an incentive to get them to sign up. I'm still pondering the validity of that (for me). I know I personally hate being offered something for free and then have to fill out that dang form on their "landing page" in order to get it. I know, what do I expect for free right? Good point. But I'm not sure I can do that since I know how irritating I find it.

So, I'll just look for whatever service there is out there that will help me with building the email data base, and just post it somewhere while I figure out how I am going to get people to sign up for it. . .

There is one thing I can do. Continue to write, and hope that I can keep up with the pace with which people read and comment. I am finding out that this also will include dealing with people who seek you out and ask advise even though they don’t know you. That’s one I have to learn how to deal with, graciously I hope.

Online Residual Revenue with She Told Me

In my efforts to become a famous, well versed online being, I am fast discovering it takes a LOT of work!

Ha! Who am I kidding? Famous? Not so much. But I am certainly having fun pretending I am. Regardless of all that I have been doing, all the sites I have joined, I am not famous and likely never will be. But it's fun trying.

On my journey to fame I am finding out that small little bits of money generated from the articles that I actually do produce is good. You have to start somewhere right?

I have discovered a site called She Told Me. Don't tune out just yet. They offer you the opportunity to post your articles, promote your site or your blog with back links, and in the process generate a small revenue from Google Adsense. Of course, the bigger your name gets, the more referrals you have, the better the potential income. That all takes time.

But it won't happen if you don't start. What have you got to loose? Using my link will give me a referral. However, don't feel that is necessary. Just type in She Told Me into your Google search - or whatever search you use - and check it out for yourself. It's a great opportunity.

That's my two cents worth for today. I hope you at least check out the revenue generating opportunity here.

Winter in Canada

We really do have a winter wonderland in our vast country. It is by turn glorious and ugly. We run the gambit of different geographical terrain, and can have warm balmy weather at one end of the country and freezing rain at the other, while the middle gets slammed with snow storm after snow storm. One coast sees soft rain and warm breezes while the other coast sees harsh winds, blistering cold and frozen landscapes.

Many of our populous retire to warmer climes for the long cold winter months. There are many a day I would love to be among them. But winter in Canada (at least most of Canada) sees a beautiful wonderland and offers some great winter sports.

It’s no wonder that Canada was chosen as a perfect spot for the 2010 Winter Olympics!

Someday when my children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates a parent, I will tell them, as my Mean Mom told me:

I loved you enough to ask where you were going, with whom, and what time you would be home.

I loved you enough to be silent and let you discover that your new best friend was a creep.

I loved you enough to stand over you for two hours while you cleaned your room, a job that should have taken 15 minutes.

I loved you enough to let you see anger, disappointment, and tears in my eyes. Children must learn that their parents aren't perfect.

I loved you enough to let you assume the responsibility for your actions even when the penalties were so harsh they almost broke my heart.

But most of all, I loved you enough . . . to say NO when I knew you would hate me for it.

Those were the most difficult battles of all. I'm glad I won them, because in the end you won, too. And someday when your children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates parents, you will tell them.

Was your Mom mean? I know mine was. We had the meanest mother in the whole world! While other kids ate candy for breakfast, we had to have cereal, eggs, and toast. When others had a Pepsi and a Twinkie for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches. And you can guess our mother fixed us a dinner that was different from what other kids had, too.

Mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You'd think we were convicts in a prison. She had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with them. She insisted that if we said we would be gone for an hour, we would be gone for an hour or less.

We were ashamed to admit it, but she had the nerve to break the Child Labour Laws by making us work. We had to wash the dishes, make the beds, learn to cook, vacuum the floor, do laundry, and empty the trash and all sorts of cruel jobs. I think she would lie awake at night thinking of more things for us to do.

She always insisted on us telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. By the time we were teenagers; she could read our minds and had eyes in the back of her head. Then, life was really tough!

Mother wouldn't let our friend’s just honk the horn when they drove up. They had to come up to the door so she could meet them. While everyone else could date when they were 12 or 13, we had to wait until we were 16.

Because of our mother we missed out on lots of things other kids experienced. None of us have ever been caught shoplifting, vandalizing other's property or ever arrested for any crime. It was all her fault.

Now that we have left home, we are all educated, honest adults. We are doing our best to be mean parents just like Mom was.
I think that is what's wrong with the world today. It just doesn't have enough mean moms!

I do not know who wrote the wonderful tribute to mothers. I'd love to give that person their proper tribute. So if you know, please tell me. I received this in the form of an email from my mother. (LOL, think she was trying to tell me something?)

Life has a way of happening doesn't it? Sometimes you look at what's happening in your life and you wonder - where has all the time gone!

Then there are times when you look at your life and you are ever so grateful for the time that you do have.

When someone you know becomes unexpectedly ill, finds out they have cancer, has a close call or is in an accident, those are the times you stop, take a second look and start to list the things you are thankful for.

Too many times we just don't take the time to say thank you, or to give recognition to those who we really should say thank you to.

Often the very people who help to save our lives, or make our hurts go away are the very same people we grumble about, are completely cranky to. I don't know about you, but I'm guilty!

This has been a year that has seen many of my loved ones on the receiving end of those angels of mercy, our Nurses. I recently read an article where one Nurse paid tribute to another Nurse and thought it very worthy of sharing. I have been writing in HubPages for about 4 months now. In addition to the space to "hone my craft", I have found some pretty awesome Hubber Friends. Many are very caring people and most are willing to help and share.

The one draw back - the only one I have found so far is the inability to post on more that one place. I suppose in itself that is a good thing. But there are some things that are shared on this site that I feel are worthy of being shared in others.

In that vein, I have decided to write this post to share one of the great ideas that I found there. The author of this particular hub is "Godslittlelchild" and her post is A Cup of Joe for the Troops

While I will give you the idea, I wanted to give credit to the author for passing on this information. I would also like to thank Green Beans Coffee for a great idea.

On their website, they offer the ability to send a cup of coffee with your personal greetings to one of our soldiers in the field. I think it is a great idea, and one worthy of a second mention.

In this life I’m a woman. In my next life, I’d like to come back as a bear. When you’re a bear, you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that.

Before you hibernate, you’re supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that too.

when you’re a girl bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you’re sleeping and wake to partially grown, cute cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that.

If you’re mama bear, everyone knows you mean business. You swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them too. I could deal with that.

If you’re a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. He EXPECTS that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat.

Please vote for this charity before the end of September and let's get some attention for them all. I can only vote once, so I am soliciting votes from the few viewers I have.

After a couple years on the internet social networking circuit I have made some pretty awesome connections that I am still excited to have made.

One such connection is with Terry Grahl who operates Enchanted Makeovers for women's shelters. As she says, "The children in shelters many times do not have the means to have some simple pleasures in life, like BUBBLES. Blowing bubbles = happiness in the air." www.EnchantedMakeovers.org

Should I downloand Photoshop on my iMac?

I have just switched to an iMac. I'm learning how to use and and so far I love it. I am running into the situation of having to purchase the same software I have already purchased for my PC again to use with my Mac. I fully expected this to happen, but before I go and purchase any software, I would sure like to know if anyone else has used it, and if they find it does what they wanted it to.

I have researched and would LOVE to be able to purchase the Final Cut Studio. But I just forked out lots of money for my computer so will have to take a rain check. In the meantime, while I love what iPhoto can do, it does not allow me to re-size pictures, nor does it have a cloning tool or some of the other special effects I love with Photoshop. I need that functionality and was wondering if anyone else has installed this program on their Mac.

On Line Revenue - Does it Work?

Well, I have been busy lately checking out many sites and ideas on how to use the ability to write, combined with knowledge gleaned on the workings of social networks to try to make some money. I have just signed up with bukisa and published two articles there (listed below).

So, while I would love to hear success stories of others who have used this combination to create on line revenue, I will not wait to hear from the few readers I do get.

I have a book in the making. It’s actually going very well considering this was not something I envisioned for myself but an idea formed because of a contact made through social networking.

1. EBook (self publishing)
2. Published book (traditional publishing)
3. Combination
This is a “how to” book for internet savvy folks so I am guessing an EBook is the way I will go.

How do you find sanctuary to write?

Sanctuary - interesting word. I think solitude, peace, calm and quiet when I hear that word. So, where do I find sanctuary...hmmm? Just about any place those things can happen. That would usually be at home when everyone else is still in bed, or away building/living their lives.

What do I do with that sanctuary when I have it? It depends on the day, but generally I love to lose myself in a good fiction, something light and a little funny.

I don't find sanctuary in writing. Writing is a necessity, a creative necessity.

So let me ask - how do you find sanctuary?

I have not written anything that has been published. I’m still in the process of finding out the benefits/disadvantages of self publishing over publishing contracts.

But because I know a few ladies who have been published, what is best for the author? To buy over the net, or to purchase through a regular retail store

What are the arguments for one over the other?
